Technical Resources Joins Centrepoint Sleep Out: Help Us End Youth Homelessness

On November 14th, Technical Resources will participate in the Centrepoint Corporate Sleepout to raise awareness and funds to help end youth homelessness.

The Centrepoint Corporate Sleepout encourages guests to give up their beds for one night, sleeping out at the Oval Cricket Ground.

This experience will also provide an opportunity for Technical Resources to hear directly from young people whom Centrepoint has supported, deepening our understanding of the challenges they face and the impact we can have.

We've set an ambitious goal to raise £8,000 for Centrepoint, and we would greatly appreciate your support. Every donation helps us get closer to ending youth homelessness.

What is Centrepoint's mission, and why is it so vital?

Youth homelessness in the UK is a severe issue, with nearly 136,000 young people seeking help from local authorities in 2022-23, though the actual number is likely much higher. The primary causes include family breakdown, leaving care, and mental health challenges. Young people without stable housing often face unsafe situations like sofa surfing, which makes Centrepoint’s mission so vital.

Centrepoint is committed to ending youth homelessness by 2037. They support nearly 14,000 young people annually through initiatives like prevention programs for at-risk youth, supported housing services, education and employment training, and financial and legal advice.

Their Independent Living Programme helps young people gain permanent housing, and their policy work aims to influence government decisions. Centrepoint also collaborates with over 100 organisations to tackle homelessness nationwide.

Our History with Centrepoint

We have been proud supporters of Centrepoint for many years - making monthly contributions to the charity. The company has donated over £140,000 since we began our support. We've also participated in a variety of fundraising events, including previous Sleep Outs, Tough Mudders, as well as holding smaller internal fundraisers like Halloween bake-offs.

Why is Centrepoint important to Technical Resources?

Our Director’s Story

Our Managing Director, Alan Derry experienced difficult times during his late teenage years and fully understands the importance of Centrepoint’s work. At 16, while starting his apprenticeship, his relationship with his family broke down, forcing him to leave home. He was fortunate to find shelter with a group of punks and support from the band he played in, but he experienced firsthand the challenges of homelessness.

By age 25, he had re-entered the workforce, starting his journey in recruitment. By 2000, he had worked his way up the recruitment ladder and founded Technical Resources. Now, he is proud to give back and support young people facing similar challenges.

A Message from Irene, Member of the Technical Resources Centrepoint Committee

"My brother John was eight years older than me, and we were extremely close growing up. At 16, John developed a drinking problem that he battled throughout his adult life. Despite support from family and friends, he eventually hit rock bottom and became homeless.

John found solace in a soup kitchen in North London, where he was befriended by two lovely women from a local church. With their help, he was eventually housed, worked hard on his sobriety, and found employment with Harringay Council as an outreach worker. He was even recognised by the council for his work with the homeless.

Sadly, John passed away in 2022 from a massive heart attack. After his death, Harringay Council named a development of bespoke homes for the homeless after him. When I had the opportunity to join Technical Resources, the work they do with Centrepoint resonated deeply with me. I am proud to play a part in helping vulnerable homeless people and carrying on what my brother started."

What Recruiters Want – Soft Skills in High Demand for Fire and Security Technical expertise is a must in any job. The Fire and Security industry is no exception. In addition to technical skills, recruiters in this field look for a different set of skills to ensure that candidates can meet the unique demands of the job. Soft skills can help candidates stand out. When you're up against other qualified candidates, you need all the advantages you can get. Here are some of the most valuable soft skills to highlight when interviewing for a Fire and Security position: Analytical Problem-Solving In this field, you'll be faced with a variety of challenges. Candidates are expected to be highly proficient in problem-solving to tackle these head-on. This skill isn't just about fixing issues. It's about being able to think on your feet to solve complex problems and come up with the best solutions that fit within a project's constraints. For someone who will be the go-to person for designing a state-of-the-art security system or fine-tuning a crucial fire alarm setup, this skill is essential. Adaptability and Flexibility In an industry that's constantly evolving with new technologies and regulations, your ability to adapt and stay flexible is another valuable asset. Recruiters are always on the lookout for candidates who thrive with change and can incorporate new tools and processes. They’re thinking about how well you can meet the needs of the company and its customers who want the latest innovations at their disposal. Collaboration and Teamwork Like most other fields, the Fire and Security sector is a team effort. Being able to work well with others is a valuable trait. It's not just about being able to get along with people. You need to be able to connect with your colleagues and build strong working relationships, even in stressful situations. No matter what, you and your team need to be focused on achieving the best possible outcome. Effective Communication Many of the candidates you’re competing with will have a similar (or better) technical background to your own. But if you’re able to communicate complex technical details in a way that’s easy to understand even for someone without the same knowledge, you can use this to differentiate yourself. A candidate who can explain intricate systems to customers just as well as they discuss them with their peers is not always easy to find. If you can highlight this skill during an interview, you can position yourself as more than just the average applicant. Customer Service Orientation And finally, a customer-centric approach can really make you stand out. In this industry, companies are always trying to meet and exceed customer expectations. Since you’ll be seen as a representative of the company, Recruiters want to know if you can help build lasting relationships with customers. Showing that you understand a customer’s needs and making sure they have a positive experience is just as important as providing an effective solution for the project. When you go into a Fire and Security interview, don’t just focus on what’s on your resume. Show off all the ways you’re a well-rounded professional who would be a great addition to any team.
